Crime victims honored at vigil in Montgomery
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office held its annual vigil for crime victims and their families.
As part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and Alabama Crime Victims’ Rights Month, “An Evening of Remembrance” took place Tuesday at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.
The event is not only to remember loved ones lost to violence, but to also support the family and friends who continue to grieve for them while showing the impact violent crime has on the community.
“We must be honest with ourselves,” said Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver. “Violence is a real and present problem in our community. Too many lives are being lost, especially among our young people. Gun violence in particular is taking our sons and daughters, classmates and friends far too soon. This is not something we can ignore and it must not be something that any one group can solve alone. Real change requires all of us.”
Dr. Tonda West, Senior Pastor of Fountain of Hope Praise & Worship Ministry, served as the keynote speaker. In addition to being a minister and community advocate, Dr. West is a Licensed Professional Counselor.
The event was free and open to the public.
