David Helms has been passionate about the future of Troy’s Rock building. Now the county commission’s 4-2 vote to sell it brings his biggest fear.

“We talked with an elderly man that actually was a little boy when it was built and he remembers them actually pulling up the rocks on buckets to the roof to work on it,” says Helms.

Commissioner Jimmy Barron made the motion to sell the building Monday.

“It was his desire to sell the building because he didn’t feel that the county would be able to fund the renovation of the building, says County Administrator Harry Sanders.

“Selling the building may be the best thing because if they don’t have the funds to restore it we don’t want to see it sit here and rot down or be condemned,” says Helms.

Sanders says there’s no exact date that the building will be advertised but he says it will be soon.

“After that advertising the county will accept seal bids for the property. Those sealed bids will be open at the appropriate time, reviewed by the commission and the decision will be made to accept any of those bids.”

If any of those bids are accepted Helms says he only wants the best for the building thats been part of the Troy community for decades.

“We just want to see the outside kept in tact.”

There’s no guarantee that someone will purchase the building. It depends on what the bids are and it has to meet the approval of the majority of the County Commission.
