Behind the Biscuits: Austin Overn
MONTGOMERY, Ala (WAKA)- Born and raised in sunny Orange County, California, Biscuit’s centerfielder, Austin Overn grew up playing many sports, and he continued to do so all the way into college. Overn was recruited to play not just baseball, but football as well at the University of Southern California.
Not only is it a huge deal to compete at the Division I level as a dual sport athlete, but Overn was getting to do it at a place and for
a person that is known for producing top talent, USC, and head football coach Lincoln Riley.
“He is probably the smartest coach I’ve ever been around. Just like his play calling, the way each play is a hand motion, and just hundreds of plays. So, his being able to give signs from the sideline to the QB, who then translates it to the whole team, he’s just a mastermind out there,” explains Overn.
More than just a storied coach, Overn also got to play with a storied quarterback, that being Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams.
Williams the Heisman Trophy winner in 2023.
“Yes Caleb is a great guy. He doesn’t say a lot, but he kind of leads by example. I think they main takeaway is, social media kind of takes their pulls at him, he gets a lot of stuff for his nails, the way he acts, and he brushes that stuff off like it’s literally nothing. So, that’s probably my biggest takeaway from him, just let all the outside noise go and just let the tape do the talking,” says Overn.
While he only played football at USC for one season, he played two seasons of baseball for the Trojans from 2023-2024.
“I think those six months of football that I had in college has changed my whole perspective on baseball. Just showing how tough those times were makes this stuff look like a piece of cake. Those are long days, hard, and just getting through it is a success. So, I think that has helped shape my baseball career,” explains Overn.
In 2024, Overn was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in third round as the 97th overall pick. He was later traded to the Rays Organization in December of 2025.
So far this season Overn leads the Biscuits in multiple categories including runs (20), hits (33), triples (3), and stolen bases (21.) Overn listed as 25th on the Rays prospect list and his projected callup to the major league is set for 2027.
