Ground is broken for the new Percy Julian High School in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Ground has now been broken for the new Percy Julian High School campus in Montgomery.

Work has been going on at the site on North Eastern Boulevard for a while, but this morning’s ceremony made it official.

The new 126-acre campus will replace the current Percy Julian High School campus, which is on Ann Street.

The main school building will be 320,000 square feet, with another 120,000 square feet for athletics. The campus will include a football field, a storm shelter and 1,000 parking spaces.

School leaders are excited to see how the school will take shape.

“Today is not just about brick steel Land or design it is about a promise it is a historic moment for our district for our community it is the beginning of a vision coming to life,” Montgomery County school board President Pamela Portis said.

“I think as a catalyst for this part of Montgomery, as an investment opportunity, it’s significant,” Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said. “It shows the vision and the intention in making sure that we are investing in all parts of the city.”

“We are so excited to be a part of this historic moment as we break ground on a new Dr. Percy Julian High School,” Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd said. “We are so excited for our scholars. We are so excited for all of the communities that we serve and of course, we thank all of our parents, all of our voters for making this a reality.”

Construction is expected to be finished in 2028.
