UAB, Medical Center to Raise Hourly Minimum Wage to $11

uab.pngThe University of Alabama at Birmingham and its affiliated hospital system are planning to raise the hourly minimum wage for employees next month.

UAB officials said in a statement Monday that the hourly minimum wage will rise to $11 starting with the pay period beginning on March 20.

UAB officials say more than 1,100 employees will see the change reflected on their April 8 paychecks.

Officials say the upcoming change is UAB’s first minimum wage increase since 2007 and the current minimum is $8.24 an hour. Officials say the minimum wage for part-time, temporary student workers will remain at the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour.

UAB officials say the university is the state’s largest employer, with roughly 23,000 workers.
