Montgomery City Council holds public hearing on convention center expansion bond proposal
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Montgomery City Council held a public hearing Tuesday on Mayor Steven Reed’s $375 million “Momentum 2040” proposal.
The hearing, which was part of the regular scheduled council meeting, allowed those who were for and against the proposed plan to speak before the eight members of the council. Some residents said they were worried that crime and safety issues in the city have not been addressed first.
If approved, $200 million would go towards expanding the downtown convention center, $45 million would fund a new sports complex and amphitheater, $15 million for housing infrastructure, $50 million for facility/service enhancements and $40 million for neighborhood projects.
A vote on the measure was not scheduled to take place at Tuesday’s meeting.
All three agenda items related to the bond will return at the next city council meeting, which is in two weeks.
