HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAKA) – An Alabama high school football team has finally snapped its 101-game losing streak, the longest in the country.
Columbia High School in Huntsville beat Greensboro 41-14 on Saturday night at home.
The Columbia Eagles had trailed by two scores early in the game, but managed to lead 20-14 at halftime. After that, they scored 21 unanswered points against the Greensboro Raiders.
It is Columbia’s first win since October of 2015.
The victory comes as head coach Sammie Coates starts his second season. He says his players deserve the moment, but now they need to focus on winning more games.
“God blessed me to be in this situation to bring this to this school, to this community,” Coates said. “I would just say thank you to the administration, to the school supporting me, for having my back the whole time and the players showing up and fighting every single day throughout the spring, throughout the summer. Everything they’ve done, they deserve every moment they stuck it out. God came out and helped support. We built a program and, it’s coming. We ain’t there yet, but we’re coming. This is amazing. I’m glad these kids get to experience this. This is a great experience for them, now they’re gonna see what it feels like. Now we can add to it.”
