ACTION 8 UPDATE: Montgomery police confirm person shot, killed on Zelda Road was ASU student

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Montgomery police have released the name of young woman who was shot and killed on Zelda Road and confirmed that she was an Alabama State University student.

Police have launched a homicide investigation into her death.

Police say the victim was 19-year-old Kaylin Smith.

As Action 8 News has reported, at just after 4AM yesterday, they were called to investigate a prowler in the 2800 block of Zelda Road. When they arrived, they heard gunshots and SWAT made entry into a residence. That’s where they found Smith, who was unresponsive and was pronounced dead.

Two other people were safely removed from the scene, police say.

Officers say they also found a juvenile male from Snellville, Georgia, who had a life-threatening, self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital.

Police say they believe the shooting is domestic-related. Smith is the 40th homicide victim of the year in Montgomery.

This is the second recent tragic death of an ASU student. As Action 8 News has reported, last month, the body of 20-year-old Ava Walters was found in the 1600 block of Interstate Park Drive. Police have charged 22-year-old Jalil Bivens of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in her death.
