Jackson Hospital celebrates 80th anniversary following emergence from bankruptcy
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Not only has Montgomery’s Jackson Hospital celebrated its emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, it is marking 80 years in operation.
Hospital employees ate cake as part of their anniversary celebration today.
The hospital opened in 1946 through the leadership of Dr. B. Franklin “Frank” Jackson, Jr., who returned to Montgomery after serving as a flight surgeon during World War II. He recognized the community’s need for expanded healthcare services and his commitment to compassionate care helped establish a legacy that Jackson Hospital continues today.
“Dr. Jackson, a general surgeon, Benjamin Franklin Jackson, Junior, along with his dad, BF Jackson, Senior, and his brother Truett Jackson opened Jackson Hospital,” Hospital CEO John Quinlivan said. “They bought a block here on Pine Street in Montgomery. The initial hospital was three houses, 37 beds, a medical staff of five physicians and so, somewhat humble beginnings, but it certainly became a wonderful facility that has long served this community.”
From those beginnings, Jackson has expanded to more than 300 beds as a not-for-profit medical facility and clinic.
Earlier this week, the hospital announced it had emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following an agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and with financial help from the city, county, state and a Georgia hospital group led by Rick Jackson, the Republican nominee for Georgia governor.
