Veteran biker group head to the capitol to honor POWs and MIAs

A group of bikers head to the state capitol — to honor members of the military who were Prisoners-of-War — and went Missing-In-Action.

American Legion and VFW riders pulled into Selma and stopped for a brief ceremony at VFW Post 3016 to honor POWs and MIAs.

“They’re going form different VFW Posts and American Legion Posts across the state to raise the POW-MIA flag in remembrance of those that are Missing in Action and that have been Prisoners of War,” said Post Commander Donnie Nelson.

“Today is actually POW-MIA National Flag Day. We’ve done flag ceremonies at 14 different posts throughout the state of Alabama over the last three days,” said Richard Sherrow with the American Legion Riders.

The group is riding to raise awareness about the servicemen and women who were POWs — or gone MIA.

“They made the sacrifice to serve our country. And to keep this country safe — and keep the freedoms that we enjoy everyday. We don’t want to forget them. We’re not going to,” said Nelson.

Bikers plan to make stops at two more VFW Posts. Then wrap things up with a ceremony at the state capitol.

“The flag will be raised at the state capitol. It’ll be there for the next year,” said Nelson.

The POW-MIA ceremony at the state capitol is Saturday morning at 10 — on the south lawn.
