Plans for the historic Prattville gin shop are moving forward.
The Historic Prattville Redevelopment authority passed a resolution to invest more than $4 million to pay and fix up part of the space. One building will be leased by the city of Prattville for public safety departments. A quarter of the land is being purchased by a developer, who plans to add 150 apartments.
There are still about 10 acres and the lake controlled by the authority. They say that will be used in the future for the public’s benefit. So there could be things like a museum or a performing arts center.
Tom Newton, Chairman HPRA said, “How important downtown Prattville is to our city and to our community. And I think everybody knows that. How important it is to save what we consider to be the heart of Prattville.”
Construction on the apartments is expected to begin by the end of the year. The public safety portion is expected to be complete by October.
