AUM baseball snaps Faulkner’s 7 game win streak
Faulkner blasted Talladega 9-3 here early Friday afternoon to run its winning streak to seven games before Auburn Montgomery ended the string with a 6-3 victory over the Eagles at the Warhawk Baseball Complex.
With the split, the third-ranked Eagles finished the day with a 9-2 overall record. Talladega, which also fell to AUM, dropped to 9-4. The 13th-ranked Warhawks improved to 7-3 with the pair of wins.
In Faulkner’s game with the Tornadoes, Mark Vasquez went the distance in the seven-inning affair, allowing only five hits and no earned runs en route to his third victory of the season. He struck out six Talladega batters.
Shortstop Onix Martinez had two hits and three RBIs for the Eagles, while Nick Cain drove in two runs and scored three times to lead the charge. He also had a home run in two official at-bats. T.J. Condon also had a pair of hits in the Faulkner win. For the game, the Eagles pounded out 10 base hits.
In the loss to the Warhawks, Faulkner starter Victor Arche was touched up for 10 hits and six earned runs in five innings of work. Houston Davenport’s RBI single in the top of the second gave AUM a 1-0 lead, and back-to-back home runs by Brandon Davis and Jack Folmar in the top of the third pushed the advantage to 3-0.
The Eagles tied it in the bottom of the third. The first run came across on an AUM error, with David Palenzuela’s sacrifice fly bringing Faulkner to within 3-2. Condon then singled in the tying run. AUM regained the lead for good in the fourth, however, with John-Mark Cosby’s RBI double highlighting the decisive three-run inning.
Raymond Moody (1-1) got the win for the Warhawks.
Faulkner, with seven of its first 11 games coming against ranked opponents, continues its tough schedule this weekend. The Eagles face No. 7 Lindsey Wilson at 11 a.m. Saturday morning and noon Sunday.
