Nursing homes across the country are inspected on a regular basis. Whether it’s done randomly or after patient complaints,
it’s something that’s a priority for the Alabama Department of Public Health.
“We take every complaint very seriously. We do follow up on that. We do investigate that, and we want people to feel comfortable in reporting to us,” said Dr. Tom Geary, ADPH Bureau and Medical Director.
Woodley Manor Health and Rehabilitation was recently placed on the “Special Focus Facilities” list. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sites  there was a failure to comply with code standards.
In the past, the nursing home has been on the list for things such as not notifying family members in a change of a patient’s condition or failure to wash dishes at the proper temperature.
However, Geary gives some reassurance to those who may be concerned about the deficiencies.
“It is not so bad that people need to be worried about the safety of their family member at Woodley nursing home right now.”
Geary says Woodley is going to get additional assistance from the Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation to help them implement better policies.
And he says the department will be inspecting them more frequently.
“We hope this time around there will be some permanent improvements made that will keep them from becoming a special focus again.”
We reached out to Woodley Manor, but management was not available before news time.
