Even though an arrest’s been made, this case is far from over. The investigation continues and that leaves very little for city leaders to say at a time with so many unanswered questions.
In a news conference, city leaders say the state has not shared with them any new facts in the case and not much more will be released until Officer Smith’s case makes it to court. On the topic of use of force, Chief Finley said each officer does have a taser.
And on body cameras, the mayor says there’s only 300 for a department of about 500. They need to be manually turned on and it’s department policy to push it on during every interaction and call.
Whether or not there’s any body camera footage of this incident has not yet been realized because of the ongoing investigation.
The chief says more training will be looked at as a result of this incident.
Chief Ernest Finley said, “We are looking at some additional training that we already have in the system prior to this incident to really help us understand the use of force continuum to make sure we make those right calls 100 percent of time.”
The District Attorney’s office will hand over the case to a grand jury once the investigation is complete.
