Montgomery Police Academy Cadet’s Intense Training
18 cadets graduated from the Montgomery Police Academy Friday.
The graduation comes just 1 day after a Montgomery Police Officer made a court appearance on murder charges in the shooting death of a Montgomery man.
The graduation reminded cadets to make sure they work to abide with the constitution everyday they are on duty. Right now, there are around 500 officers part of the department. Last month, MPD Officer A.C Smith shot and killed Greg Gunn after an incident in the Mobile Heights community. Finley says he wants officers to make sure his officers are prepared for any similar situation. Cadets receive 22 weeks of training. But more training is needed after graduation while serving.
“We are developing our career development track to make sure that these officers besides getting their 12 additional hours every year we’re going to do some more in service type training,” says Finley.
During those 22 weeks of training for cadets 25 to 35 percent of cadets drop out.
