MLB-LUZARDO

Luzardo hurt playing video game, Ohtani OK?

UNDATED (AP) — Athletics left-hander Jesús Luzardo will be off the mound for a while. He might also be staying away from video games. Luzardo is out indefinitely after breaking the pinkie finger on his pitching hand when he thumped a table while playing a video game. The injury occurred before his start Saturday.

An X-ray after a loss to Baltimore showed a hairline fracture and Luzardo was put on the 10-day injured list. Oakland manager Bob Melvin said he didn’t know how long Luzardo would be out.

Luzardo wound up pitching three innings and allowed six runs. He is 1-3 with a 5.79 ERA in six starts this season.

In other baseball news:

— Shohei Ohtani is a question mark to make his scheduled start on the mound for the Angels when they face Tampa Bay ace Tyler Glasnow in Anaheim tonight. Ohtani was hit on the right elbow by a pitch in the first inning of Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Seattle. Los Angeles manager Joe Maddon said the elbow was sore and the Angels would need to check this morning on Ohtani as to whether he’d still be able to pitch that night against the AL champion Rays. Ohtani was wearing a pad on the elbow.

— Milwaukee outfielders Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain are expected to return to action during the upcoming series that starts in Philadelphia this evening. President of baseball operations David Stearns says it’s possible they could be ready tonight. Yelich hasn’t played since April 11 because of a lower back strain. Cain is recovering from a left quad strain and last played on April 13.

— Toronto begins a 10-game, 11-day road trip through three different time zones, starting in Oakland tonight. The Blue Jays also will make stops in Houston and Atlanta. Left-hander Steven Matz (4-1) faces Athletics righty Frankie Montas (2-2) in the opener at the Coliseum. The Blue Jays will see if George Springer is able to play. He exited early in Sunday’s win over Atlanta with leg fatigue.

— A couple of perennial NL playoff teams open a three-game series at Wrigley Field when Mookie Betts and the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers visit Kris Bryant and the Chicago Cubs this evening. Both clubs are coming off big outbursts at the plate. A.J. Pollock had eight RBIs and Matt Beaty seven, with both players hitting early grand slams, for Los Angeles in a 16-4 victory Sunday at Milwaukee. Meanwhile, the Cubs clocked five home runs — two by Bryant — but lost 13-12 in 10 innings at Cincinnati for their seventh defeat in nine games.

AUSTRALIA-ABUSE REPORT

Investigation reports toxic culture in Australian gymnastics

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — An independent review of gymnastics in Australia has found that there’ve been several key drivers that have contributed to a culture of physical, emotional and sexual abuse of athletes.

Gymnastics Australia last August asked the Australian Human Rights Commission to examine the sport’s culture and practices following complaints from at least 20 former gymnasts.

The Commission says such problems in the gymnastics program have been fueled by a ‘win-at-all costs’ approach, a culture of control, a tolerance of negative behaviors and the young age of female gymnasts.

The investigation follows similar reviews in the United States, Britain and the Netherlands.

PUERTO RICO-WOMAN KILLED

Puerto Rican boxer faces charges after lover found dead

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rican boxer Félix Verdejo has turned himself in to federal agents just hours after authorities identified the body of a dead woman as his 27-year-old pregnant lover.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said late Sunday that Verdejo is being charged with kidnapping and carjacking resulting in death and with intentionally killing an unborn child.

The body of Keishla Rodríguez was found in a lagoon in the U.S. territory’s capital Saturday, a couple of days after she was reported missing. Verdejo and his attorneys have previously declined comment.
