Diamond Hornets begin SWAC road schedule

MONTGOMERY, Ala (bamastatesports.com)  – The Alabama State baseball team returns to Southwestern Athletic Conference play at Alabama A&M in a three-game weekend series.

The two longtime rivals will play in Huntsville Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. on the AAMU campus.

The Hornets (16-12 overall, 9-0 SWAC) are coming off back-to-back midweek losses at Troy and Jacksonville State in which Alabama State combined to score just one run.

“With every setback comes a comeback,” Alabama State head baseball coach Mervyl Melendez said. “It’s now time to prepare for this weekend and fix what we did wrong the last few games.”

The Hornets played their first three SWAC series at home in sweeping Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, and Alcorn State. This will be the first road conference series of the season, as Alabama State will play the next four conference matchups on the road.

The Hornets and Bulldogs (6-21, 3-5) split six meetings last season. ASU won two of three at home, while Alabama A&M won two of three in a series played at Birmingham’s Rickwood Field.

“Our team understands what needs to be done,” Melendez said. “I can’t wait to get back on the baseball field to see us fix those things.”
