Memorial Day Fly-Ins Held In Tuskegee

Memorial Day is a time to reflect on those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. This weekend in Tuskegee, hundreds came out to keep the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen alive.

The event honors the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of pilots who became the first African Americans to fly in combat.
This Saturday’s event was the 47th annual.

Hundreds were able to watch plane fly-ins, parachuters and visit the historic site for free.  A kids event was held where they could make model airplanes.

Christine Biggers, a Park Ranger said, “Many of the Tuskegee airmen said that they grew up building airplane models. So this inspired them to want to fly. So our idea behind it is to inspire the kids to possibly aviation careers if not but let them see that the sky is actually the limit for them.”

Many of the airmen trained at Moton Field during World War II. The program was the first of its kind in the United States. The men were still segregated from white pilots, but earned respect as some of the best pilots in the armed forces.
