Tuskegee gets walloped by Hurricanes 12-4
MONTGOMERY, Ala (goldentigersports.com) — Georgia Southwestern State University used a four-run inning to open a lead and pull away from Tuskegee for a 12-4 non-conference victory at Paterson Field Tuesday evening.
Tuskegee (9-21) scored a pair of runs in the first inning, using four hits to get ahead early. Ryan Green reached with a one-out single, before advancing to second on a two-out single by Matthew Reed. Alexander Henderson drove Green home with an RBI single through the left side, before Miles Martin singled to right center to drive home Reed for the two-run lead.
However, Georgia Southwestern trimmed the lead in the second with one before scoring four runs off of four hits in the third to take an insurmountable 5-2 lead. The ‘Canes extended the lead to 7-2 in the sixth, before Tuskegee used an outfield error by Georgia Southwestern to trim the deficit to 7-3.
The ‘Canes scored again in the seventh, while Tuskegee added their final run in the bottom of the eighth when Henderson doubled to wall driving in Lane Williams. The ‘Canes added four more in the ninth to put the game away.
Reed led Tuskegee at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Henderson finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. The Golden Tigers were held to eight hits by nine different pitchers in the contest.
Meanwhile, Daniel Croom (1-3) suffered the loss, working four innings in the start. He allowed six runs off of six hits, while walking five and striking out two. Desmond Jones and Clayton Crews combined to work the final five innings, allowed six runs – just two earned – off of seven hits. Crews struck out four in three innings of work.
Tuskegee returns to action this weekend in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series at Paterson Field against Spring Hill College. The series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon, and pre-game festivities for the “Breast Cancer Awareness Game” beginning at 11:30 am.
