Mohamed vaults Tuskegee to first SIAC title championship

ROCK HILL, S.C. (goldentigersports.com) — The Tuskegee University track and field programs had multiple student-athletes score on day two of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, including one student-athlete claiming a title.

Freshman Eljack Mohamed, an All-SIAC selection prior to the meet beginning, won the school’s first title this season at the championships. Mohamed finished first in the pole vault with a height of 3.20 meters, more than 0.15 meters clear of the conference runner-up.

Mohamed was not the lone Golden Tiger to make it to the medal stand on Friday. Senior Gregory Coleman finished third in the two-day Decathlon with 5,124 points. He finished 132 points from second place, and just 482 points from the title.

Vincent Williams scored points for the second consecutive day for Tuskegee, finishing seventh in the discus. He scored a pair of points with a throw of 36.32 meters. Amari Carter scored for the first time in the meet, finishing seventh in the Decathlon with 4,182 points.

Although they did not make it to the medal stand, several other student-athletes scored points for Tuskegee on day two of the meet. Jade Daniels scored on the women’s side, finishing sixth in the high jump with a height of 1.50 meters – earning three points on the day.

Cheyanne Williams also scored on Friday, earning four points with a fifth place finish in the hammer throw. She finished with a throw of 34.47 meters, less than three meters away from the top four.

Although they were not finals, several Tuskegee student-athletes and teams qualified for the finals in their events to take place on Saturday.

Ariel Truitt qualified seventh in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.24 seconds, while Darvelle Smith qualified for the 110m hurdles final with a time of 15.72 seconds – good for fifth in the prelims.

Frederick Higgins qualified for the 1500m finals with a time of 4:15.56 –  a season-best by nearly two seconds. Meanwhile, the men’s 4x400m relay team qualified for the finals with a time of 3:30.41 – good for eighth place in the prelims.

The SIAC Championships conclude Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center on Saturday.
