SAL GIRLFIGHT PICGreenville Police say a fight at Dunbar Park was anything but normal. They say the fight on Sunday involved eighth and ninth grade girls fighting over comments one girl made about another on social media.

“They were just not happy with what the other girl was saying about them,” says Chief Investigator Justin Lovvorn. “And just felt like they were making fun of them. Doing things of that nature.”

What makes it so unusual, according to the police, was a mother’s involvement. Tameka IMG_1514Hawkins is the mother of one of the girls. Police say she went to the fight with her daughter and stayed to watch the fights herself, without stopping the girls. She was arrested and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and endangering the welfare of a child.

“It’s obvious that at least one of parents was condoning this type of activity and was there and present when all the fight occurred,” says Lovvorn. “And she would intervene and break up a certain fight at a certain time, when she felt like maybe they’d had enough. But that’s unacceptable.”

Greenville Police Chief Lonzo Ingram says the cell phone video of the fight is “just despicable” and that”there’s no need for that kind of behavior.” He is also calling for the younger crowd to help stop the violence.

“We’re calling for young men and young women to show some leadership, step up, and put a stop to this kind of behavior,” he says. “There’s just no need in this. The end result will be sooner or later someone will get seriously injured or killed, which has already happened in other places.”

Ingram is referring to the recent fights in Georgia and Delaware, where teens lost their lives in fights. While the incident Sunday did not end in death, police say they are not going to let it get that far.

“It’s not something that we’re going to put up with in our area,” says Lovvorn. “And it shouldn’t be accepted anywhere. This is not a trend that’s good for anybody. We’re not going to tolerate it.”

Four juveniles were also arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Both Lovvorn and Ingram encourage anyone who sees video of a fight or other illegal activity to call their local police and report what they saw.
