People often use social media like Facebook and Twitter to promote a business or an event, now tourism officials in Selma are using it to boost their whole industry.
Its part of a national campaign called This Place Matters. The campaign uses social media to help preserve historic sites and promote tourism.
“One real asset we have here in Selma and Dallas County are all of our historic sites and you know that spans every epoch of history from the early years of our founding through the Civil War, through Civil Rights into today,” said Selma-Dallas County Tourism Director Landon Nichols.
Nichols says the tourism industry is responsible for over a thousand jobs in Dallas County.
He says visitors to the area last year spent more than $80 million dollars.
