ADT Warns of Potential Scam
ADT alarm system company is warning customers of a potential scam targeting people in Montgomery and across the country.
One man who asked to not be identified says he was scammed into signing a new contract with another company when he thought he was getting an upgrade from ADT.
“I pretty much lost everything,” he said, “I feel terrible, I feel like, I feel stupid. But you know, I wasn’t on my game. Usually you couldn’t get me like that.”
Bob Tucker, ADT Director of Corporate Affairs, says this an occurrence they are seeing more and more.
“They’re convincing them that they need an upgrade,” he said, “and all of this is in order to sign them to a new contract at a higher rate.”
ADT has taken these companies to court in the past for what they say are fraudulent claims and deceptive sales techniques. Tucker says they hire young adults – often college students – and send them door to door.
“They spend all day long,” Tucker explained, “they can knock on about 100 doors a day and they get one or two people to convert over to their company and sign a contract they can get several hundred dollars if not a thousand.”
ADT officials give the following tips to protect yourself in these types of situations:
-Never let someone into your house if you don’t know what company they are representing
-Always ask for a photo ID or business card
-Never be pressured into signing something you do not want to sign
If anything like this happens to you contact the Better Business Bureau or your local police.
