Alabama Department of Corrections Adds New Officers in Selma

The Alabama Department of Corrections continues to increase the number of new officers but prison overcrowding remains a huge concern.

The DOC added two dozen new corrections officers its ranks this morning in Selma.

Graduates successfully completed 12-weeks of intense academic and physical training.

They say they’re up for the challenge of working in the state prison system.

“Before I came to the academy I had plenty of onsite training. So, I had a pretty good knowledge of what’s going to be expected of me and what is going on in the prison first hand,” said graduate Trevor Manuel.

Alabama prisons have one of the highest inmate to officer ratios in the country at about nine to one.

Officials with the DOC say recruiting new officers continues to be a top priority.
