How Safe are Montgomery Public Schools?
Officials tell us what security measures they have in place in MPS that helps them stay proactive.
School is back in session in Montgomery.
And while students are learning, officers are doing their part to keep them safe.
“We take every possible measure that we can take to provide for the safety of our children,” said MPS Chief of Security Bobby Crew.
Bobby Crew oversees 58 security guards, 5 technicians, 2 locksmiths within the Montgomery Public School system.
He says each school has magnetic door locks.
There are about 2100 close circuit cameras throughout the system, along with school resource officers in all schools keeping an eye on who is coming and going.
“That’s their job. They’re there to investigate both inside and outside the school. So if there is an immediate concern inside the school, if there is a threat outside the school or just a concern, they are there to address that as well,” said School Enforcement Bureau Chief Sgt. Jarrett Williams .
While students safety is a top priority within the system, Sgt. Williams says the school resource officers are there for more than just safety.
They offer programs for students including gang resistance training and a new one this year called “Bridging the Gap.”
“Some of the issues that have risen in the communities can be bridged when we understand each other. We’ll take kids through traffic stops, what happens if an officer comes to your house or if you are stopped on the street, why we do certain procedures that we do and how we can better have interaction between both of us,” said Sgt. Williams.
