A Rinse and Repeat Forecast

Wednesday morning, August 17, 2016
Forecaster: Ryan Stinnett

Our Wednesday will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with hot and humid conditions as highs climb back into the lower to mid 90s again and heat index values will be over 100° much of the afternoon. This afternoon, we will see the daily round of scattered showers and storms. Chance of any one spot receiving rain, about one in three.

FIONA, IS THAT YOU?: Way out in the Atlantic, we have our newest tropical depression that has developed. At 500 AM AST, the center of Tropical Depression Six was located near latitude 13.2 North, longitude 35.2 West. The depression is moving toward the northwest near 15 mph, and this motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Slow strengthening is forecast during the next day or two, and the depression is likely to become a tropical storm today. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 mb (29.74 inches). The good news is that this system is not expected to impact land, and be a fish storm as it tracks into the North-Atlantic Ocean.

SECOND HALF OF WEEK: The upper ridge off the Southeast Coast begins to weaken to end the week, and we expect an increase in the number of scattered showers and storms. We will forecast a mix of sun and clouds Thursday and Friday, and rain chances look to be on the order of the 30-50% range. Afternoon highs should be in the lower 90s for most communities locations across South/Central Alabama.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: With a weaker ridge, and a surface front slowly approaching from the north, looks like we will have scattered to numerous showers and storms Saturday and Sunday. Understand it won’t rain all weekend, but a passing shower or storm is a pretty good possibility from time to time. Looking into next week, a front looks to approach the region and that should bring drier air into the state, and could limit rain chances by the middle of next week.
