Report: Unemployment in Selma Highest Among Cities in Alabama
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
A new unemployment report lists Selma as the city with the worst unemployment rate in the state.
Could that have an impact on the upcoming city elections?
New Alabama Department of Labor statistics for July of 2016 — have the unemployment rate for Selma at 11.4 percent.
This comes just as people are getting ready to head to the polls to elect city leaders.
Voters say jobs, crime and poverty are the main issues they care about.
“The pay rate got to go up,” said Gary Williams. “You ain’t going to be able to survive if you making nine dollars an hour and everything else going up, like your rent on your house, groceries, utilities, all that’s going up so, how you gone survive with that?”
Department of Labor statistics also show that the unemployment rate in Selma has been on a steady decline for at least a year.
It’s down nearly two percent from this time last year.
