New Litter Patrol on State Right-of-Ways

montgomery sealThe city of Montgomery’s new litter initiative targeting problem areas on state right-of-ways will begin August 29.

City officials last week announced plans for a new initiative creating a five-person patrol to remove litter on highways and byways within Montgomery’s city limits.

“Most of the routes comprise state right-of-ways, which typically remain under the state’s authority to patrol,” Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said. “However, we worked with ALDOT to request partial authority to help the state patrol and pick up these problem areas for litter in our community. We are grateful to ALDOT for cutting through the red tape and allowing us to make Montgomery even more beautiful!”

Montgomery Clean City Commission will supervise the crew consisting of state inmates on work release contract from Red Eagle Work Center in Montgomery, who will pick up litter on five different routes Monday through Thursday each week, excluding state holidays and inclement weather.

Motorists are reminded to use caution when crews are present along the following routes:

  • Route 1:  Taylor Road at I-85 to Troy Highway; Troy Highway to the Eastern Blvd. and Eastern Blvd. to I-85;
  • Route 2:  I-65 at Northern Blvd. to the Eastern Blvd. and Atlanta Highway;
  • Route 3: Atlanta Highway at I-85 to Madison Avenue;
  • Route 4: I-65 at West South Blvd. to the West Blvd. and Birmingham Highway to Maxwell Blvd. at I-65;
  • Alternative Route as time allows: I-65 at West South Blvd. to Troy Highway.

Equipped with white uniforms and safety vests and followed by a City of Montgomery vehicle along each route, while working both directions on each route. The new routes complement the City’s efforts already in place to pick up litter on neighborhood streets and roads.
