World’s Largest Peanut Boil sells out on Sunday

The World’s Largest Peanut Boil in Luverne is finally over and the Alcazar Shriners have great numbers to report. The Shriners sold 25.5 tons of boiled peanuts over the Labor Day Weekend, with sales totaling over $100,000.

Travelers pulling up to get a bag of peanuts were greeted with this sign. Boiled peanuts were sold out on Sunday afternoon.

The Shriners actually ran out of boiled peanuts not once, not just twice but three times. On both Thursday and Friday afternoons, the Shriners sold out of all their prepared boiled peanuts and had to close down the stand until the next day. On Sunday around three o’clock, they ran out of their famous peanuts for good. Travelers heading through Luverne on Monday saw only and empty stand and a sign that said, “Sold Out.”

“I’m glad they sold them all. I just wish I had gotten some,” said peanut lover Carolyn Berry. Berry drove all the way from Troy to enjoy the salty snacks, only to find out they were gone. “Yeah they’re the best. I stopped by one day and got some six or seven years ago, and I’ve been coming ever since.”

“They just need to get more peanuts! So they don’t run out!” laughs Gail Davis. Davis traveled from Snowdoun just below Montgomery to buy enough of the peanuts to last for the next year.

The Shriners always start cooking their popular peanuts on the Wednesday before Labor Day Weekend. They say, if you want to make sure you get your peanuts next year, you should head to Luverne on Thursday or Friday. They can’t guarantee there will be any peanuts left on the last days of the long weekend.

The World’s Largest Peanut Boil has been in operation since the 1970s. The Shriners use the money to offset costs for the upcoming year and support the Alcazar Shriners’ Hospitals.
