Longtime Selma Businesses Share Their Secret to Success

From the West Alabama Newsroom–

Its often said that 96-percent of businesses will fail within the first ten years but two businesses in Selma have bucked that trend in a big way.

Swift Drug Company is celebrating its 100th year in business and Bush Hog is celebrating 65 years.

Both companies have managed to survive and thrive in Selma over the years despite various challenges.

“We’ve had economies go up and down. We’ve had people moving in and out of the community and we’ve had people retire that had skill sets that were hard to replace,” said Bush Hog President Jerry Worthington.

“This business survived the Great Depression,” said Swift Drug Company owner Buddy Swift. “We survived the Great Recession and so you have ups and downs in business but we’ve had a lot more ups than we have downs.”

Both say their workers are the secret to their company’s success and longevity.
