Hornets down Warhawks 56-50 in exhibition game
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) —- Sophomore Desmond DeRamus tallied a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, but the Auburn Montgomery men’s basketball team fell an exhibition contest against NCAA Division I Alabama State, 56-50, Tuesday at the Reed-Dunn Acadome.

• As an exhibition contest, the result and statistics do not count toward either teams season totals.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• DeRamus posted game highs with both the 19 points and 10 rebounds, while adding six assists and two steals in 37 minutes.
• Juniors Lafayette James-Core and Jarett Croff each recorded six points for the Warhawks. Croff chipped in seven rebounds and three blocks.
• Fellow junior Kameron Hornbuckle contributed five points, three rebounds and a game-high six blocked shots.
• Senior Julius McCoy finished with three points, an assist, a rebound and a steal in 25 minutes off the bench.
• Sophomore Jarvis Johnson drained a pair of 3-pointers for the Warhawks to scored six points.
• Senior Romoane Eager was held scoreless in the contest, but pulled down five rebounds and snagged a pair of steals.
• Tony Armstrong led Alabama State with 14 points and seven rebounds.
• Amir Warnock scored five points, but grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and blocked the lone shot of the night for the Hornets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• DeRamus scored the first points of the contest with a layup with 19:29 remaining in the first half.
• The Hornets took a 10-6 advantage following a trey by Torloft Thomas with 14:19 to play in the first half, but AUM scored seven straight points and took a 13-10 lead on a fastbreak layup by DeRamus with 12:02 to play in the half.
• The Warhawks took a 22-21 lead on a Hornbuckle basket 5:15 left before halftime. However, the Hornets held AUM scoreless for the remainder of the half, outscoring the Warhawks 7-0, and took a 28-22 lead to the intermission.
• ASU opened the second half with a 6-2 spurt and extended their lead to 34-24 on a jumper by Artis Cleveland with 16:09 remaining in the contest.
• Using a trey by Johnson and McCoy, as well as a pair of buckets by Croff, the Warhawks used a 12-2 run and tied the score at 36-36 with 10:41 remaining in the game.
• Leading 41-40, the Hornets scored 10 straight and opened up a 51-40 lead with 4:53 remaining following a pair of free throws by Reginald Gee.
• The Warhawks provided the final margin on a trey by Johnson with 22 seconds remaining.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks converted just 19-of-59 shots from the floor, good for just 32.2 percent. The Hornets faired just slightly better, hitting 19-of-57 shots for 33.3 percent.
• ASU held a commanding 51-36 advantage on the glass, including an 18-11 margin on the offensive end.
• AUM struggled from distance, hitting just 5-of-25 3-point attempts. The Hornets managed just 4-of-16 from behind the arc.
• From the charity stripe, the Warhawks finished just 7-of-14, while ASU converted 14-of-22 (63.6 percent).
• Despite being outrebounded, the Warhawks held a 29-26 advantage in the paint and blocked nine shots, compared to just one for the Hornets.
• AUM converted 21 ASU miscues into 16 points. The Hornets forced 19 turnovers and converted them into 14 points.
• The Hornets held a 14-10 advantage in second-chance points and outscored the Warhawks 23-19 from the bench.
