Montgomery Co. Deputies Concerned With Heroin In Area

CBS 8 is taking action against crime. Montgomery County deputies say heroin use in the area is on the rise and after making a number of arrests. They hope to not only get the drug off Montgomery streets… and clear up other crimes too.

Heroin is an addictive drug that’s been around for years. And even with the use of other street drugs on the rise, deputies say it doesn’t seem as if heroin is going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, they say it’s actually regaining popularity.

This couple is the latest in trouble with the law after Montgomery County deputies say they busted them with heroin. William Blake and Abigail Bromberg are charged with two counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

“These two guys they were driving around in a Lexus, we had made some buys from them, we got them stopped,” Said Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy, Derrick Cunningham.

An expensive drug deputies believe is making its way through the county.

“This is $200. That’s what he was charging for this,” Said deputy, Randy Pollard, showing us .3 grams of heroin.

“He was the I don’t want to say the ‘sole source’ provider for heroin because we’re seeing more and more of it in Montgomery anyway, but he cornered the market for a little bit, yes,” Said Pollard.

The couple faces charges for drugs. They’ll also face charges of burglary and theft of property. Deputies say when they stopped Blake and Bromberg during the undercover buy, they found thousands of dollars worth of items stolen from a home in Pike Road. Now deputies want to know if they are connected to other burglaries in the area.

“When you start burglarizing into people’s homes and going into people’s homes to get property just so you can go back and sell it to make money so that you can go and purchase drugs to either be able to use it or to sell it so this is something that is serious to us,” Said Cunningham.

A drug so serious, it’s left more than 150 people dead from heroin overdoses in Birmingham in the last 2.5 years. Deputies are hoping the same trend doesn’t happen in Montgomery.

“When you’re 22, you’re selling to young people — young people: it goes back into our school system,” Said Cunningham.

Cunningham tells me as the price of other drugs go up. They are seeing more people shift to heroin. But they say just because you don’t see the blue lights, doesn’t mean they’re not coming after you. As you saw with this couple, all it took was undercover bust.

Blake is facing a $120,000 bond.
Bromberg is facing a nearly $83,000 bond.
