Southside Church of Christ Works to Fight Crime in Montgomery

Crime is something that everyone wants to prevent or reduce in the City of Montgomery and one church decided to take on the issue head on.
The Southside Church of Christ held family and friend day Sunday and it was a day to not only invite friends and family, but to also inform the community. It was another Sunday service at Southside Church of Christ until the end of the service. That’s when Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange and Interim Police Chief John Brown came together to talk to the congregation about the future of the city as well as ways to prevent crime in the community.
“Pastor Anderson and Delbert Anderson came to see me a couple of months ago,” said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange. They said, “Hey would you come be a part of our family day and talk a little bit about crime, the quality of life, and some of the things going on. You know at the end of the day providing jobs and education really does impact crime. “
According to Mayor Strange two thirds of the people living in Montgomery believe the quality of life in the city is positive and two thirds of the people also believe the police in Montgomery are doing a good job in driving down crime. But at the end of the day the Mayor believes the stats do not matter if you are a victim of crime.
That’s why Minister Tim Anderson believes the comminity and the church need to work together.
“We gotta learn how to be more accountable to each other, to communicate more about how we feel, what we’re concerned about and that way the more we talk about things. Ignorance doesn’t have a place, and we can make decisions that are going to be helpful, not hurtful in our communities.”
Fellow members appreciated the mayor and Interim Chief reaching out to the church.
“I thought it was a wonderful and fantastic idea because we need more from our local government as well as our state government,” said Mattie Addell
Chief Brown and Mayor Strange said there are ways you can help prevent crime such as locking your doors, join or start a neighborhood watch, and the big thing be aware of your surroundings.
