Emma Raducanu, 18, wins US Open women’s title
NEW YORK (AP) —
Emma Raducanu (ra-doo-KA’-noo) completed her historic run through the U.S. Open by beating Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 for her first Grand Slam title. Raducanu was already the first player in the professional era, dating to 1968, to come through the qualifying rounds to reach the final of a major tournament. The 18-year-old from Britain then won it, becoming the youngest Grand Slam champion since 17-year-old Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004.
In just her second Grand Slam tournament, Raducanu ended the tournament as the first player since Serena Williams in 2014 to not drop a set in the U.S. Open.
She closed out the match after needing a medical timeout during her service game for treatment after cutting her knee.
Fernandez knocked out three top-five players en route to the final but couldn’t find the energy for a comeback after playing four straight three-set matches.

Mets host Yankees on 20th anniversary of 9/11
NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees and Mets are set for an emotional game in Queens Sunday night on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the first time the Subway Series will overlap with Sept. 11.
Both teams will wear hats representing New York’s first responders, two years after Mets slugger Pete Alonso said the league rejected his proposal for specially designed hats doing the same. Alonso instead had custom cleats made for each of his teammates — without asking MLB for permission — and later donated his shoes to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
Mets manager Bobby Valentine will throw out the first pitch to then-Yankees manager Joe Torre, and Hall of Famer Mike Piazza will be among the alumni in attendance. Piazza memorably hit a go-ahead homer for the Mets on Sept. 21, 2001 against the Braves in the team’s first game back at Shea Stadium.
Elsewhere around the majors:
— Tommy La Stella and Brandon Belt each slugged three-run homers, and the San Francisco Giants pounded the Chicago Cubs 15-4 for their sixth straight win. La Stella finished with three hits, including a double, five RBIs and scored three runs for surging San Francisco, which improved to a major-league best 92-50. The Giants entered 2 ½ games ahead of the Dodgers in the NL West. La Stella’s home run off Tommy Nance in the fifth thudded off Wrigley’s right-field videoboard and capped a six-run rally that allowed San Francisco to pull away for its eight win in nine.

Cubs’ Heyward kneed in head, leaves game against Giants
CHICAGO(AP) — Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward left Saturday’s game with San Francisco in the fourth inning after sliding into third and getting kneed in the head by Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford.
Heyward was at first when Crawford fielded David Bote’s grounder at short and threw to first baseman Brandon Belt. Bote beat it out for an infield single, then Heyward tried to advance to third.
Heyward beat Belt’s throw back to Crawford, who was covering the bag. But as Crawford took the throw on the run and jumped over Heyward, his knee hit Heyward in the head. Heyward stayed down for a few minutes as he was checked by medical staff.

Verdell, No. 12 Oregon stun No. 3 Ohio State 35-28
UNDATED (AP) — C.J. Verdell ran for 161 yards and had three touchdowns as shorthanded No. 12 Oregon upset the No. 3 Buckeyes 35-28 for their first regular-season loss in nearly three years. Ohio State never led the game it was favored to win by 14 1/2 points despite gaudy numbers from freshman quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Its front seven struggled to contain Verdell, control the edge and get after Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown in front.
The Buckeyes had a chance to tie it late after pulling within a touchdown with 7:55 left. But when they got the ball again, Stroud took his first sack of the day and then threw an interception in front of a stunned crowd of more than 100,000.
In other Top-25 results:
— Demetris Robertson scored three touchdowns and Jarquez Hunter rushed for 147 yards as No. 25 Auburn raced past FCS program Alabama State 62-0. The Tigers erupted for 35 points in the third quarter to take control. Robertson, who transferred from SEC rival Georgia this summer, had three catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns and added a 36-yard touchdown run on a sweep in the third. Hunter, a freshman, broke the Auburn record for longest run with a 94-yard touchdown later in the quarter. The Tigers blocked a punt and a field goal try that Nehemiah Pritchett returned 80 yards for a score.
— No. 13 Florida tuned up for the start of Southeastern Conference play with a 42-20 rout of overmatched South Florida that did little to answer the question of whether starter Emory Jones or backup Anthony Richardson is best suited to run the Gators offense. The quarterbacks shared playing time for the second straight week, with each having his way in the opening half against a USF defense that allowed touchdowns on five consecutive possessions after producing a three-and-out to start the game. Jones threw for one touchdown and ran for another, but also tossed two interceptions. Richardson ran for 115 yards and one TD while throwing for 152 yards and two scores.
— Raheem Blackshear rushed for two touchdowns to lead No. 19 Virginia Tech to a 35-14 victory over Middle Tennessee. The Hokies scored on their first three possessions of the second half including back-to-back TDs by Blackshear in a game they led 14-7 at halftime. Virginia Tech broke open the game when Jalen Holston scored on a 29-yard, third-quarter run to take a 21-7 lead. Blackshear then scored on runs of 6 yards and 1 yard on ensuing possessions. Braxton Burmeister threw for 142 yards and a score for Virginia Tech. Bailey Hockman threw for 207 yards and a score for the Blue Raiders.

Georgia QB JT Daniels out against UAB with oblique injury
UNDATED (AP) — Quarterback JT Daniels did not start Saturday for No. 2 Georgia against UAB because of an oblique injury. Bennett got off to a blistering start, throwing a pair of touchdown passes in the first five minutes to stake Georgia to a 14-0 lead. Daniels’ injury was not believed to be serious. But it did cause him enough discomfort that the Bulldogs decided to take no chances against the Blazers, who are a 25 1/2-point underdog.

MONZA, Italy (AP) — Valtteri Bottas has continued a fantastic weekend as he won the sprint at the Italian Grand Prix on a miserable afternoon for Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, who finished fifth.

But he’ll start at the back of the grid on Sunday as he is going to take a new power unit and will receive a penalty for doing so.
