Djokovic Grand Slam ends with loss to Medvedev

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic’s bid for calendar-year Grand Slam ends with loss to Daniil Medvedev in U.S. Open final.

Novak Djokovic fell one step short in his Grand Slam bid. Daniil Medvedev beat him 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to win his first major title.

Djokovic was trying to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four Grand Slam singles titles in the same year. But the No. 2 seed from Russia made clear it wasn’t going to happen Sunday when he built a 4-0 lead in the third set after winning the first two.

Djokovic will go into next year still tied with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with 20 major titles, the most in men’s history.

In other action Sunday, Sam Stosur and Zhang Shuai won their second Grand Slam women’s doubles title together and denied Coco Gauff and Caty McNally their first with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

Steelers stun Bills in season opener behind staunch defense

UNDATED (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers’ new-look offense overcame a slow start, Ulysees Gilbert returned a blocked punt 9 yards for a touchdown, and Pittsburgh rallied to a season-opening 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Down 10-0, the Steelers scored on each of their first four possessions of the second half, with Roethlisberger putting Pittsburgh ahead for good by lobbing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Diontae Johnson in the left corner of the end zone.

The pass initially went off Johnson’s fingertips, but the receiver secured the ball before tumbling out of bounds 3:41 into the fourth quarter. The Steelers extended their lead to 20-10 some 90 seconds later with Miles Killebrew bursting up the middle to block Matt Haack’s punt, with Gilbert scooping up the loose ball and running it in untouched.

In opening his 18th — and perhaps final — season, Roethlisberger posted his 36th career fourth-quarter comeback to tie Drew Brees for third on the NFL list. He finished 18 of 32 for 188 yards and a touchdown.

Chris Boswell hit all three field-goal attempts, including a game-sealing 45-yarder with 2:42 remaining.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

— Kyler Murray scored five touchdowns and linebacker Chandler Jones had a career-high five sacks as the Arizona Cardinals simply dominated the Tennessee Titans 38-13 for a big road win to open the season. Jones tied the franchise record and had three sacks in a first quarter. Jones also forced two fumbles the Cardinals turned into 14 points to back up his demand for a new contract. Murray tormented the defending AFC South champs as Arizona scored the first 17 points.

— Evan McPherson kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired in overtime to push the Cincinnati Bengals to a 27-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings. The game-winning kick was set up by a gutsy call. On fourth-and-inches for the Bengals from their 48, Burrow rolled out and hit tight end C.J. Uzomah in stride on a crossing pattern for a 32-yard gain and get within range for McPherson. Cincinnati’s Germaine Pratt recovered Dalvin Cook’s fumble to set up the winning drive for Cincinnati. Greg Joseph kicked a career-long 53-yard field goal to force overtime for Minnesota.

— Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith scored on his first NFL catch, hauling in one of three touchdown passes from Jalen Hurts on a stellar opening day for the Philadelphia Eagles. They made a winner of Nick Sirianni in his coaching debut, routing the hapless Atlanta Falcons 32-6. Hurts threw for 264 yards and rushed for another 62 yards. It was a miserable debut for new Falcons coach Arthur Smith. Atlanta was held to a pair of field goals in the first half.

— Russell Wilson threw three of his four touchdown passes in the first half and Seattle clamped down in the second half to give the Seahawks a 28-16 season-opening victory at Indianapolis. Wilson had a perfect passer rating in the first half and finished 18 of 23 with 254 yards and four scores. Indianapolis lost its eighth straight opener and its fifth in a row with a different quarterback. Carson Wentz was 25 of 38 with 251 yards and was sacked three times in his Colts debut.

— Justin Herbert threw for 337 yards and a touchdown to help the Los Angeles Chargers beat Washington 20-16 in an ugly Week 1 matchup full of turnovers and big penalties. Herbert fumbled into the end zone and threw an interception but connected with Mike Williams for the go-ahead score after Washington’s Antonio Gibson lost a fumble of his own. L.A.‘s Austin Ekeler also ran for a touchdown after being listed as questionable with a hamstring injury. Ryan Fitzpatrick was knocked out of his debut as Washington’s starting quarterback with a right hip injury. Taylor Heinicke (HY’-nih-kee) replaced Fitzpatrick and could be the starter moving forward.

— Sam Darnold threw for 279 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score against his former team as the Carolina Panthers defeated the New York Jets 19-14 to win their first season opener since 2018. Darnold connected on a 57-yard touchdown pass with fellow ex-Jet Robby Anderson. A healthy Christian McCaffrey piled up 187 yards from scrimmage on 30 touches after missing 13 games last season with injuries. Carolina sacked Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson six times and intercepted him once.

— Tyrod Taylor threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns filling in for Deshaun Watson to lead the Houston Texans to a 37-21 win over Trevor Lawrence and the mistake-prone Jacksonville Jaguars. Taylor took over at quarterback for Houston this season with Watson’s future with the team uncertain after 22 women filed lawsuits alleging sexual assault or harassment after he requested a trade. Lawrence had a bumpy debut for Jacksonville by throwing for 332 yards and three touchdowns but also had three interceptions.

— Dre Greenlaw returned an interception for a touchdown to help the San Francisco 49ers score 17 points over two-plus minutes late in the first half and they held on for a 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions. San Francisco led 38-10 early in the fourth quarter and allowed Detroit to score 23 points in three-plus minutes to pull within eight points. The Lions turned over the ball on downs at the San Francisco 24 with 12 seconds left.

Lauer takes no-no into 6th; Brewers hit 5 HRs in 11-1 rout

UNDATED (AP) — Eric Lauer no-hit Cleveland into the sixth inning a day after Milwaukee threw a history-making no-no, his teammates belted five homers and the Brewers beat the Indians 11-1. Just hours after Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader combined on the record ninth no-hitter in the majors this season — and Cleveland’s record third time being no-hit this year — Lauer threatened to make it two in a row. Lauer, a native of Northeast Ohio, didn’t give up a hit until Ryan Lavarnway singled to center with one out in the sixth. Lavarnway, the Indians’ backup catcher, lined a 1-2 pitch into center field.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Teoscar Hernández each hit a grand slam, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. slugged his 44th homer, and the Toronto Blue Jays overpowered the Baltimore Orioles 22-7, finishing two runs shy of the franchise record. Guerrero’s drive tied him with Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani for the major league lead. Jake Lamb also homered during a 10-run third inning for the Blue Jays, who took three of the four in the series. Gurriel set the franchise record with his fourth grand slam of the season and also had a two-run homer in the fifth to drive in seven runs.

— Garrett Hampson homered twice and knocked in all five runs as the Colorado Rockies dealt another blow to the Philadelphia Phillies’ playoff hopes with a 5-4 victory. Both of Hampson’s homers came on 0-2 pitches. Philadelphia pitchers have allowed 16 homers on 0-2 counts this season, the most in the majors. The Phillies fell 4 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta with 18 games to play. The Rockies took three of four at Philadelphia and won the season series, 5-2. Bryce Harper hit his 32nd homer of the season for the Phillies.

— Robbie Grossman drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning, Jeimer Candelario homered twice, and the Detroit Tigers pulled out an 8-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The walk issued by J.P. Feyereisen brought in Victor Reyes. Candelario’s second homer, a two-run shot, tied the game in the 10th after the Rays took a 7-5 lead in the top of the inning. Kyle Funkhouser pitched a scoreless inning to pick up the win. Yandy Diaz doubled twice and drove in three runs for Tampa Bay. Nelson Cruz also homered for the Rays, his 31st.

— Patrick Corbin working seven strong innings as the Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2 to avoid a three-game sweep. Corbin allowed two runs on four hits, striking out four with two walks. The veteran left-hander is 3-0 against the Pirates since joining Washington in 2019. Lane Thomas hit a three-run homer in the fourth off Bryse Wilson to put the Nationals in front to stay. Luis Garcia and Alex Avila also homered for Washington. Juan Soto doubled and tripled and is hitting .407 over his last 16 games.

— Wilmer Flores homered and drove in three runs, Kris Bryant scored two against his former team, and the San Francisco Giants hung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 for their season-high seventh straight win. Owners of the best record in the majors, the Giants matched their longest streak since a seven-game run in August 2020. They were rolling along with a 6-3 lead in the seventh before the Cubs scored two while chasing Logan Webb (10-3). The Cubs had the tying run on in the ninth after Jake McGee gave up a one-out double to pinch hitter Patrick Wisdom. But Frank Schwindel and Ian Happ grounded to first.

— Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman each hit a solo homer off Anthony Bass in the seventh inning, Eddie Rosario went deep off Edward Cabrera in the fourth, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 5-3. The division-leading Braves, going for their fourth consecutive title, padded their lead to 4½ games over Philadelphia. Miami, far back in the division standings and playing the role of spoiler, had won two consecutive series against the Phillies and New York Mets before coming up short against Atlanta. Rosario went deep for the 10th time to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. Cabrera left the game with right big toe soreness.

— Leury Garcia hit a game-ending home run with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Chicago White Sox over the Boston Red Sox 2-1. After Boston reliever Garrett Whitlock struck out Eloy Jiménez and Yasmani Grandal to begin the inning, Garcia behind 0-2 before hitting a 98 mph fastball over the center-field fence. It was the fifth homer of the season for Garcia, who is filling in at shortstop with starter Tim Anderson on the injured list. Chicago took a 1-0 lead and a three-hit shutout into the ninth before Craig Kimbrel struggled with his control and blew the save.

— Lance McCullers Jr. threw six strong innings, Kyle Tucker homered and the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-1. McCullers permitted one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. He won his third straight decision and has allowed two runs or fewer in three straight starts. After Juan Lagares tied it 1-1 in the fifth with a homer to left, Tucker hit a two-run homer to right-center off Jose Quijada in the bottom of the inning. The Angels’ Shohei Ohtani went 1 for 3 with a walk on the day Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tied him for the major league lead in homers at 44.

— Nolan Arenado homered for the second game in a row and five pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 on Sunday. St. Louis has won four of six. Arenado hit a two-run homer in the first off Sonny Gray , who then retired the next 14 hitters. Arenado, who has 31 homers, also homered in the eighth inning of the Cardinals’ 6-4 victory Saturday night. St. Louis starter J.A. Happ allowed two hits over 5 1/3 innings. Luis Garcia, T.J. McFarland, Genesis Cabrera and Giovanny Gallegos finished, with Gallegos picking up his eighth save in 15 opportunities.

— Kyle Isbel drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 5-3. Adalberto Mondesi homered for the Royals and Whit Merrifield had three hits, including a pair of doubles. A quartet of relievers combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Jake Brentz struck out two in the seventh, Josh Staumont worked out of a jam in the eighth and Scott Barlow finished for his 12th save. Byron Buxton had two of Minnesota’s six hits.

Dodgers’ Max Scherzer notches 3,000th career strikeout

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Max Scherzer of the Los Angeles Dodgers has become the 19th player in major league history with 3,000 strikeouts. The 37-year-old right-hander fanned Eric Hosmer of the San Diego Padres in the fifth inning at Dodger Stadium. The crowd gave the three-time Cy Young Award winner a standing ovation, and Scherzer doffed his cap.

He threw the keepsake ball into the dugout. Hosmer went down on six pitches, retired on a swinging strike.

The punchout also kept Scherzer perfect through seven innings in a game that also included an immaculate inning. He’s thrown two no-hitters in his 14-year career but never a perfect game.

Elsewhere around the majors:

— San Diego Padres starter Blake Snell left a game with an apparent injury in the first inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Snell retired his first two batters on popups to left field. He was facing Trea Turner when he suddenly left the mound with a 2-1 count, having thrown 11 pitches. The left-hander limped slightly as he walked off. The 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner is 7-6 with a 4.22 ERA. He set a franchise record with 13 consecutive hitless innings across his last two starts. It was a significant blow to the Padres, who are fighting for the second NL wild card.

Oregon, Iowa enter top 5; Arkansas has 1st ranking since ’16

UNDATED (AP) — Oregon and Iowa are the big movers in The Associated Press college football poll after road wins over top-10 opponents. The Ducks’ victory over Ohio State earned them a promotion from No. 12 to No. 4.

Another impressive defensive performance by Iowa in the Cy-Hawk Trophy game pushed the Hawkeyes from No. 10 to No. 5.

Arkansas was rewarded for its home win over Texas with its first appearance in the AP Top 25 in five years, coming in at No. 20.

Alabama remained No. 1.

GOLF-BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Horschel wins at Wentworth, fueled by Ryder Cup snub

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — Billy Horschel became the second American after Arnold Palmer to win the BMW PGA Championship following a dramatic final round. Lee Westwood, Bernd Wiesberger, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton secured the final automatic qualifying places in Europe’s Ryder Cup team on Sunday.

Horschel spun his approach shot at the par-5 18th back to within 2 feet of the cup and that guaranteed a closing birdie for a 7-under 65 for a 19-under 269 total.

Laurie Canter had a chance to force a playoff by making birdie at the last with a putt from 15 feet. It missed right and was tied for second with Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Jamie Donaldson.

Ricciardo wins Italian GP as Verstappen and Hamilton crash

MONZA, Italy (AP) — Daniel Ricciardo (rih-KAHR’-doh) has won the Italian Grand Prix for McLaren’s first win in nearly nine years.

Championship leader Max Verstappen and defending champion Lewis Hamilton both crashed out.

Ricciardo’s win was his first since Monaco in 2018. He finished 1.747 seconds ahead of teammate Lando Norris and 4.921 ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who turned in a strong performance after starting from the back of the grid after a penalty for taking a new engine.
