MLB-SCHEDULE

Cardinals set team record for consecutive wins

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the three most storied franchise in National League history, but they’ve never had a winning streak as long as they own right now.

The Cardinals picked up their 15th consecutive win as Harrison Bader, Tyler O’Neill and Paul DeJong (deh-YUHNG’) homered in an 8-5 win over the Cubs in Chicago. Catcher Yadier (YAH’-dee-ehr) Molina and center fielder Bader were part of a pair of rundowns that became a double play, preserving the Redbirds’ one-run lead in the eighth. It was the fourth double play of the afternoon for the Cards, who have homered 11 times in the first three games of the series.

St. Louis topped the previous club record of 14 straight wins set in 1935.

In Saturday’s other major league action:

— Ranger Suarez pitched a four-hit shutout while striking out seven as the Phillies beat the Pirates, 3-0. Bryce Harper hit his 34th home run and Matt Vierling (VEER’-lihng) hit his first major league homer, both coming in the third inning of Philadelphia’s fifth win in a row.

— The Yankees picked up their fifth straight win and moved into a tie with Boston for the first AL wild card by defeating the Red Sox, 5-3 on Giancarlo Stanton’s grand slam in the eighth inning. Kevin Plawecki (plah-WEH’-kee) and Bobby Dalbec homered for the Red Sox, who have dropped two straight after carrying a seven-game winning streak into the series.

— The Athletics pulled out a 2-1 decision over the Astros on Starling Marte’s game-ending double with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Josh Harrison had an RBI single and Elvis Andrus (EHL’-vihs AN’-droos) singled twice for the A’s.

GOLF-RYDER CUP

US maintains control in the Ryder Cup

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) — Only a total collapse by the United States Ryder Cup team on Sunday will prevent it from coming away with the trophy.

The U.S. closed out Saturday’s fourball matches with an 11-5 lead over Europe, its biggest two-day advantage since 1975. Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler won the day’s final best-ball match 3 and 1 over Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland to split the afternoon matches.

America’s other point in the afternoon came from Dustin Johnson, who improved to 4-0 for the week. Johnson paired with Collin Morikawa for a 4-and-3 win over Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy.

The Americans need just 3 1/2 points on Sunday to claim the cup. No team has won fewer than 3 1/2 points on the final day since the tournament has been closing with 12 singles matches.

NFL-NEWS

TJ Watt ruled out against Cincinnati

UNDATED (AP) — Steelers star outside linebacker T.J. Watt won’t play against Cincinnati after all. The team has downgraded Watt from questionable to out for Sunday’s home game due to a groin injury suffered in last Sunday’s loss to the Raiders.

He was limited in practice this week but said Friday he was hoping to play.

Watt’s absence means the Steelers will be without both of their starting outside linebackers on Sunday.

In other NFL news:

— The Dolphins have placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (TOO’-ah tuhng-ah-vy-LOH’-ah) on injured reserve. That means he will miss at least three games before he can return from fractured ribs. Jacoby Brissett (brih-SEHT’) is set to start for Miami on Sunday.

— Packers offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the 49ers due to an ankle injury. Jenkins got hurt during Monday night’s 35-17 victory over the Lions, though he remained in the game. The Packers also announced that tight end Dominique Dafney won’t play against the Niners due to a hip injury.

— Chargers defensive lineman Justin Jones will miss his second straight game after being downgraded to out for Sunday’s clash with the Chiefs in Kansas City. Jones suffered a calf injury in Los Angeles’ 20-16 win over Washington on Sept. 12 and has not practiced the last two weeks. Edge rusher Joey Bosa is questionable and remains a game time decision due to ankle and toe injuries.
