Selma Man Claims City of Selma Violated His Right to Bear Arms
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
A Selma man claims his civil rights were violated by the city after he was denied access to city hall while wearing a concealed weapon.
David Blackmon of Selma says he was refused entrance into city hall because he was carrying a concealed weapon.
Blackmon says he has a permit that makes it legal for him conceal and carry a weapon, but he says the city hasn’t met all of the requirements necessary to legally restrict his access to the building.
“In Alabama, and the United States constitution and Alabama’s constitution, I’m guaranteed the right to my firearm unless the city or state meets the criteria to restrict me from that,” said Blackmon.
Police Chief Spencer Collier says not allowing people to bring guns in city hall is a matter of safety.
“It’s city hall. And if you check, and I’m a former Homeland Security Director, the number one threat right now, is an active shooter and a soft target,” said Collier.
Blackmon said he has filed a complaint with the Attorney Generals Office about the incident.
