Selma Mayor Defends City Fees for Jubilee Bridge Crossing
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
Selma Mayor Darrio Melton defended the city’s position of charging Jubilee organizers more than $23,000 dollars in fees for the event.
He also denied allegations that the fees are an effort to try and stop the Bridge Crossing Jubilee from happening.
Melton says the city can no longer offer city services for the event at no charge.
He accused Jubilee organizers of using the event to cash in on the city’s history.
“I think its shameful that Sen. Sanders would try to capitalize off the work that the foot soldiers did to make democracy a reality for his personal gain, that’s shameful,” said Melton.
“When we talk about the Jubilee event, its not just about a march across the bridge. Its about a four day festival where we have concerts, we have vendors in town, we have step shows. They have other events that they have, which cost money.”
The Bridge Crossing Jubilee is scheduled for March 2nd through 6th.
This year is the silver anniversary of the event.
