Scam Targets Troy Bank and Trust Customers

For some Troy Bank and Trust customers, keeping tabs on their accounts is a no brainer.

“I  travel a lot so i have to call them and give them information and let them know that i’m going to be out of town so that my card and stuff will work,” says Jeffrey Bennett.

Bank officials hope other customers are as attentive as Jeffrey Bennett. Because this week, they’re warning customers of 2 scams hitting the area. One involves a caller pretending to represent troy bank and trust, saying that they can get the customer a better rate on their mortgage.

The second scam is one where they say they can help with additional social security benefits, says Dianna Lee, Marketing Officer for Troy Bank and Trust.

Officials say the goal of both scams is to get a customer’s account information something bank officials here, say they never do over the phone.

“We have everything pulled up so we know your account number, we know your social security number. if we do anything, we’ll get you to verify the numbers by asking you can you tell me the last eight digits of your credit card, can you tell me the last four digits of your social,” says Lee.

Officials say, the calls from scammers this week have come from the 850 area code.

“If you get a call from an area code where your bank is located or says that it is a non-published or not public number, that should throw up a red flag,” says Lee.

“You know it’s good having a hometown bank, i would bout know who’s calling me,” says Bennett.

Officials say, paying attention can save customers financial headaches.

“I just never give any information over the phone, not my social security number, no numbers like that over the phone. it’s not necessary these days and times,” says Bennett.

Dianna Lee of Troy Bank and Trust says these scams aren’t unusual this time of the year when scammers are lurking during tax season.

If you believe you are the victim of one of the scams you are urged to call your bank immediately.
