MONTGOMERY, AL — This Thursday, the stakes will be higher than usual in the gridiron clash between rivals  Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee high schools. For the first time in 12 years, the schools will be fighting for the “Battle at the Bowl” trophy. Jeff Davis won the last Battle at the Bowl in 2003 by a score of 23-6.

Montgomery Public Schools Athletic Director Brandon Dean said the renewal of the Battle of the Bowl tradition means the winning team can claim more than just bragging rights.

“With the help of our sponsor, Coca-Cola, we have revamped and restored a first-class trophy that will go to the winner of this year’s contest,” Dean said.

Both teams are hoping to make some noise this year. Jeff Davis has started strong, compiling a 4-0 record for the first time since 1994. Lee opened the season with wins against Lanier and Carver but now is seeking redemption after losing two straight. Jeff Davis coach Lee Carter said both teams have proud traditions.

“This will be a matchup of two talented teams with two great coaching staffs who are trying to restore two historical programs,” Carter said. “We are excited to be a part of it.”

Lee coach Tyrone Rogers has firsthand knowledge of the rivalry, having suited up as a player for the Generals in the 1990s.

“This rivalry goes back a very long time, even before my era of playing against Jeff Davis,” Rogers said. “The last three years, this game has gone down  to the last minute. The title says it all. It will be a ‘Battle of the Bowl.’ “
