More than 200 dogs, along with some cats, from across the state got the ride of their lives, to save their lives.

The Sunshine Flyaway held Saturday at the Greenville airport was a huge endeavor to get the animals out of high risk shelters and hopefully to their forever homes.

Fifteen planes flown by pilots,  part of the Pilots N Paws national non-profit, donated their time, plane and gas to fly the animals for free.

The animals came from 21 counties, many out of high risk situations where were likely to be put down, and flown to different rescues in Florida.

Devon Barger, flown 1,000+ animals said, “You are giving back to mankind, you are giving back to life. All creatures are God’s creatures so there’s no point in killing everything.”

The event was coordinated by Alabama Rescue Relay and Pilots N Paws.

Butler County Humane Society hosted the event that they hope to make an annual flyway. And even though they will continue trying to find animals forever homes, the rescuers want their message to be about the importance of spay and neutering your pets.
