AP source: Denver OT Ja’Wuan James tears Achilles off-site

A person with knowledge of the injury tells The Associated Press that Broncos right tackle Ja’Wuan James sustained a season-ending torn Achilles while working out away from the team facility Tuesday. James has only played a handful of snaps since signing a four-year, $51 million deal with the Broncos in 2019. He missed most of that season with a balky knee and opted out of last season over coronavirus concerns. James’ $10 million salary is in jeopardy because his injury occurred away from the team’s facilities. James was among hundreds of NFL players boycotting offseason work at team facilities this spring.

The Denver Broncos have released quarterback Jeff Driskel and signed free agent tight end Eric Saubert. Driskel played one season in Denver. He began the 2020 season as Drew Lock’s backup and played well in Week 2 loss at Pittsburgh. But he lost his one start against Tampa Bay the following week and was supplanted by Brett Rypien as the primary backup for the remainder of the season. Driskel contracted the coronavirus in November and the rest of the team’s quarterbacks were disqualified from a game against the Saints when Denver had to start a rookie practice squad receiver.
