Car Slams Into Historic Brundidge Site

A car slams into a piece of Brundidge’s history
Â
Police say 30-year-old Terrell Gray was behind the wheel when he crashed his car into the Johnston Mill.Â
Â
It’s estimated the damage will cost more than $10,000. No definitive word on what caused the car to crash. But police believe Gray may have been distracted and wasn’t under the influence.Â
Â
The mill serves as a museum and is open to the public during the Peanut Butter Festival in October.Â
Â
Commercial peanut butter was made there dating but to the late 20’s. It was a staple of Brundidge’s economy and it’s believed it may have been the first peanut butter production in the country.Â
Â
President of Historical Society Lawrence Bowden said, “You know history is important to us because if we don’t take a good look at where we’ve been we don’t know where we are going. Â Our history can be a source of pride to us. And this was a source of pride to us. It created a lot of jobs during the depression years and so it’s just a part of the community and we want to continue that.”
Â
Gray’s been charged with reckless driving and having a suspended license. Both are misdemeanors but police say he will have to pay a fine and restitution for the damage.Â
