State Urges Judge to Let Voter ID Law Stand

Alabama’s secretary of state is urging a federal judge to let Alabama’s voter ID law stand.

Secretary of State John Merrill, in a court filing last week, argued that Alabama has one of the most inclusive photo ID laws in the nation.

The state since 2014 has required voters to present photo identification at the polls.

Merrill’s attorneys argued that the law does not present an undue burden for voters. State attorneys have said Alabama accepts student ID’s and will make a voter ID card for people who lack identification.

Greater Birmingham Ministries and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored filed a lawsuit challenging the law as an infringement on voting rights and an attempt to suppress the influence of minority voters.
