36,000 Alabamians Must Refile Taxes after TurboTax Error

As many as 36,000 people in Alabama must file amended state tax returns following programming errors in TurboTax preparation software.

AL.com reports that some of TurboTax’s calculations relating to losses from at-risk investments were not correct. As a result, taxpayers may have filed an incorrect Alabama income tax return.

The company said in a statement that it has updated those calculations.

The Alabama Department of Revenue notified state residents over the summer about the programing errors. Those who received the notifications were directed to the TurboTax website in order to file an amended return.

TurboTax says customers have until Oct. 23 to use its online application to file amended returns. After that, customers must download a desktop version to complete the process.
