11 Montgomery Public Schools Make “Lowest Performing Schools in Alabama” List
Nearly a dozen Montgomery Public Schools have been named in this year’s legislature-mandated list of the lowest performing schools in Alabama.
Compared to the list released last January, the total number of schools has risen from 10 to 11. That is the second-highest number in the state, behind Birmingham City Schools, which had 16.
Overall, there are 75 schools statewide that are considered failing.
A majority of the “failing schools” in Montgomery Public Schools stayed on the list.
The schools on the list are:
Bellingrath Middle
Capitol Heights Middle
Davis Elementary
Dunbar-Ramer (new)
Goodwyn Middle (new)
Highland Gardens Elementary
Jefferson Davis High
Nixon Elementary
Robert E. Lee High (new)
Southlawn Middle
Sidney Lanier Senior High
“I am very, very disappointed, and I find it unacceptable,” Montgomery County School Board President Clare Weil told Alabama News Network.
“We have got to do better. There some things in place, and I think it’s important to understand that we made gains on the A-F report card. It’s not shown yet on this report. It’s raw material, and there is learning going on. We’re making improvements, but we’ve got to make achievement improvements, too,” she said.
The failing schools list uses standardized test scores, while the recently released A-F school report cards use different factors.
Parents with children in a failing school have an option to move them to a non-failing school. They can also choose to send their child to a private school and may be eligible for a tax credit to help with tuition.
Chisholm Elementary and Seth Johnson Elementary made improvements and are no longer on the failing schools list.
