Montgomery’s Hyundai plant donates $50,000 to Alabama Wildlife Federation for new interactive tortoise habitat

MILLBROOK, Ala. (WAKA) – A new interactive habitat will soon be on display at the Alabama Nature Center, and it’s all thanks to a local manufacturer.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama is donating $50,000 to the Alabama Wildlife Federation to help sponsor the brand new interactive gopher tortoise habitat at the NaturePlex located in Millbrook.

The habitat will feature a crawl-through burrow system, so kids can fully observe and explore the gopher tortoise burrow.

The gopher tortoise is considered a keystone species in the state of Alabama and many animals depend on its shelter for survival, including snakes.

HMMA has been partnering with the Alabama Wildlife Federation for over a decade, and has so far donated over $100,000 to the organization.

“We are excited about this particular donation with the Alabama Wildlife Federation. It’s the oldest conservation organization in the state of Alabama,” said Scott Posey, public relations manager for HMMA. “Alabama has some of the most unique and diverse ecological systems in the country, whether it’s in the northeast and the mountains there or all the way down to the Tensaw Delta in Mobile. In between our lakes and rivers and forests that we all get to enjoy and it’s important for us to protect them. We invest in improving the quality of life and communities in which our team members work and live.”

An official opening date for the new habitat has not been set yet.
