Summer camps at Alabama Shakespeare Festival give young performers time to shine

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — This summer, young performers in Montgomery can trade screen time for stage time at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

The theatre’s 2026 summer camps are now open for registration, offering students from kindergarten through 12th grade the chance to explore acting, musical theater and behind-the-scenes production work. There is also a Shakespeare-focused camp for adults 18 and older.

From memorizing lines under the spotlight to learning how to operate a soundboard backstage, campers can choose from a variety of programs designed to build creativity and confidence.

“We want students to feel empowered both on and off the stage,” said Cameron Williams, director of education at ASF. “Theater teaches collaboration, communication and critical thinking in a fun and engaging environment.”

Action 8’s Estee Morrison spoke with Williams in the interview above.

New this year are musical theater camps, giving students the opportunity to combine acting, singing and movement in performance-based classes. Budding stage crews can also enroll in the tech theater camp, where participants learn the ins and outs of running a live production behind the curtain.

The camps run June 1 through July 31.

Registration information is available at ASF.net or by calling (334) 271-5324.
