Kiwanis Club of Pike Road awards several student scholarships

PIKE ROAD, Ala. (WAKA) – The Kiwanis Club of Pike Road is presenting scholarships to several students.

Yesterday, the club awarded a total of $8,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors. Club president Steve Straughn announced the recipients at Pike Road Town Hall during a council meeting.

Four students each received a $2,000 scholarship. They are:

– Olivia Robinson of Macon East Academy, heading to Troy University to study nursing.
– Emma Grace Spivey of Pike Road High School, going to Albany University to major in music education.
– Jackson Amburn of Pike Road High School, who will be attending Troy University to major in broadcast journalism.
– Jordan Tetter of Alabama Christian Academy , who is going to the University of Alabama Birmingham to study mechanical engineering.

Straughn said the club looks at much more than grades when awarding scholarships. He says the club seeks out deserving students who are often overlooked by other avenues of financial aid.

Over the past five years, the club has awarded $35,000 in scholarships. The club raises money through its 5K Family Fun Run in the spring and by selling historic Pike Road Christmas ornaments in the fall. The club’s next project will be directing parking at the Pike Road Summerfest celebration on June 25.
