A wellness program underway at Selma High School teaches students how they can be their best selves everyday.
Action 8’s Savannah Sabb was the Mistress of Ceremony — and Guest Speaker at the Fixing Your Crown event Thursday morning.
“I wanted them to know that there were going to be moments where they’re going to doubt theirselves and feel like they weren’t enough,” said Sabb.
“But just remember that confidence is key. And it’s normal to not feel like you have it all worked out. But just know that, it will. It will work out. Just keep a positive thought in mind. And I just wanted them to just know that we’re on their side.”
The event aims to show 9th grade girls that they are valuable and beautiful.
Each student received a sparkling tiara — and a certificate at the event.
Organizers say the goal of the program is providing students with the tools and support they need to become their best selves.
“The whole focus is to make sure that they understand that they have options and that they are in control of who they are,” said Dr. Rose Irby Wilkins with City Block Wellness Center.
“People need to learn, especially young ladies, how to conduct themselves in terms of, when something is happening and when they are stressed, there are options.”
Organizers says the event is part of National Mental Health Awareness Month.
